Who we are
CloseNest is made by Coopr Ventures Ltd, trading as StuStud.io, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 10507837) at Greville House, 10 Jury Street, Warwick, Warwickshire, CV34 4EW. We are the data controller for everything described here. Write to us at hello@stustud.io, or find us at www.stustud.io.
The short version
CloseNest is built to know as little about you as possible. There is no account to create: no name, no email address, no phone number. The app mints an anonymous identity on your phone, and everything you share is tied to that identity and to your nest, the pair you form with your partner. We use no analytics or tracking software (the one measure we take is a monthly count on our own server, below), we show no adverts, and we never sell your data.
What we hold
Your anonymous identity: a random identifier created when you first open the app, the bird you chose (Little Bird or Big Bird), your phone’s time zone, and when the identity was created.
Your nest: the pairing of your identity with your partner’s, when you paired, and whether the nest is live or closed. Invite codes are three random words that expire after 48 hours; unused codes are deleted within a week of expiring.
What you share: your answers to the daily questions (the sliders, the choices, the tick boxes and anything you type in the free-text fields), the weekly closeness score and the Sunday reflections, each with the date it was shared. Once you tap Share my day, that day’s answers are locked and cannot be changed, by you or by us. The stars you give your partner’s shared days (the Helpful? rating) are stored too, with the nest they were given in; you can change a star.
Notifications: if you allow them, the token Apple gives us for your phone. Whether or not you do, a record of each notification the ritual prepares for you (which one, for which day, and whether Apple accepted it for delivery), so we never send more than intended. That record holds no content.
Subscription: whether your nest has a live subscription and when it renews. Apple takes the payment; we never see your card or your Apple ID. RevenueCat, the service that validates the subscription for us, receives your anonymous identifier, Apple’s identifier for our apps on your device, and Apple’s purchase record — and nothing you have written.
Security records: the network address (IP address) of each attempt to enter an invite code, kept for 48 hours to stop guessing, then deleted. Our hosting provider also keeps standard server logs for a short period.
On your phone, the app keeps unsent drafts of the day’s answers, a few once-only settings and a count of the insights you have already seen in your nest. Deleting the app removes them.
What we do not hold
No names, email addresses, phone numbers, contacts, photos, location or advertising identifiers. Nothing from other apps. We do not build a profile of you, and we do not track you across apps or websites.
Why we hold it, and the legal basis
To run the ritual: pairing you with your partner, locking each day’s answers and revealing them to each other only once you have both shared. This is the service you asked for (performance of a contract).
To send the notifications you have allowed (your consent, given through the iOS permission and withdrawable in Settings at any time). The record of the notifications prepared for you is part of running the ritual (performance of a contract).
To keep the service safe: the invite-code throttle and the server logs (our legitimate interest in preventing abuse).
To learn whether CloseNest helps: once a month we work out the average Helpful? star across all nests, a single number, like a satisfaction score. We count the stars in aggregate only, and only in a month when at least ten nests have given them: we do not look at any one person’s or nest’s stars, and nothing goes to analytics software (our legitimate interest in improving the service).
Some of what you share is sensitive by nature: your mood, your relationship, your sex life. We process it only because you choose to share it with your partner through the app (your explicit consent), and only to show it to your partner and, if you subscribe, back to you both in Insights. You can withdraw that consent at any time by deleting your account.
Who sees it
Your partner sees a day’s answers only after you have both shared that day. The weekly closeness score and the Sunday reflections are never shown on a day; they feed Insights. Your partner also sees the average of the stars you have given their days, on their Profile, once you have given five — and you see theirs the same way; nobody sees a single star. Nobody else sees your answers, and the rules that enforce this run on our servers, not just in the app.
We use two service providers, both acting on our instructions under written contracts. Supabase hosts the database and the code that runs the ritual, in the European Union (Ireland). RevenueCat validates subscriptions; it is based in the United States, and transfers to it rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, under its data processing addendum. Apple processes your subscription payment under its own privacy policy.
Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. It is not end-to-end encrypted: the free text you write can be read by people with access to the database, which means the studio and our hosting provider under its own access controls, and we hold it only to show it to your partner. We may disclose data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
For as long as your identity exists. Invite codes expire after 48 hours and the security records after 48 hours; the notification record goes after two weeks, and notification tokens that have not been refreshed for six months are dropped. If you start a new nest, the days you shared in the old one stay in the closed nest, where each of you can still delete your own side.
Deleting your account
Profile › Delete account removes your identity and everything tied to it: your answers, your nest membership, your notification tokens and record, and your invite codes. Your partner keeps their own answers; your side of the days you shared disappears from their view. The stars you gave go with your identity; the stars given to your days go with your days. It also asks RevenueCat to delete its record of you. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription, so cancel that in your Apple ID settings first.
Because there is no account to sign back into, if you lose or wipe your phone, your identity and your history cannot be recovered.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or ask for it in a portable form. Two honest notes: answers are locked once shared, so a shared day can be deleted, with your account, but never edited; and because we do not know who you are, most of these rights are yours to exercise in the app itself, where History shows everything you have shared and Delete account erases it. For anything else, write to hello@stustud.io: we cannot tell from a message alone which identity is yours, so we will ask for screenshots of your Profile and History, which let us find it. Your Profile and your History list are enough: please don’t send an opened day, which shows your answers. If you write to us, we keep your message and any screenshots only to answer you, and delete them once we have. We never delete an identity by email — only deleting your account in the app does that — unless the law requires it or the identity belongs to someone under 18. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Adults only
CloseNest is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly hold data about anyone younger; if you believe we do, tell us and we will delete it.
Changes
When this policy changes we will update the date at the top and, for anything that matters, tell you in the app.
